1850’s Thomas Nast
Santa Height
- 16", Width - 8", Depth - 6". One-of-a-kind figure
whose head and limbs are sculpted from polymer clay, with hand painted
porcelain eyes, and a cloth body over a wire armature. He wears a brown
velvet suit trimmed with mink, handmade leather shoes with silver buckles, and
holds a doll with an antique lace dress. Thomas Nast was a 19th century illustrator who created the original American Santa from his memories of Old World Father Christmas figures. He always dressed his Santa in brown. Our red-clad Santa arrived 100 years later, created in the 1920’s by Coca Cola. |
